Where to eat tasty and cheap in Rome - my favorite restaurants

One of the most popular questions asked by our guides during excursions:

  • Where to eat tasty and inexpensive in Rome?
  • Where do the Italians themselves go? Do not recommend tourist places.

Dear friends and readers, the time has come to share with you my favorite restaurants in Rome. For a long time, these addresses were only available to our friends and customers. and transmitted directly, as secret and exclusive.

The important point is that we ourselves go to the same places as tourists or tourists go to the same places as we do - this does not matter. The main thing is high-quality, tasty and affordable food.

Popular rumor naturally advertises the right places and many of the institutions below are quite popular, and some institutions only have to test the quality and stability over time.

  • Tip: You can find out more cool and atmospheric places during our author's individual excursion DIVING IN A TRASTEVER WITH TASTING.

How much is

You also need to understand that in the historical part of Rome the average bill for a modest dinner for 2 will start at least 50 euros. Doubt it? Try to have dinner, for example, in Navona Square or near the Pantheon for less than 60-70 euros and share your experience in the comments. Moreover, the main attractions have high traffic, and this means that in most cases, the owners do not care whether you return or not. And, of course, they will charge you a good percentage or a fixed fee of 5-8 euros per person for service.

In Rome, all the locals know that the Trastevere district is a gastronomic paradise. For delicious, reasonably priced food and the true atmosphere of the old city, here you are.

  1. Pasta e Vino Osteria

The name of the restaurant Pasta e Vino speaks for itself - only pasta and wine. Pasta is made manually from eggs right in front of your eyes. To get started, you need to choose one of six types of pasta: fettuccine, gnocchi, ravioli, tagliolini, strozzapti or spaghetti. Then choose pasta sauce, such as Carbonara or Pomodoro.

Prices are very affordable - from 7 to 10 euros. Homemade lasagna costs 9 euros.

Address: Via della Pelliccia, 12, 00153 Roma RM - This restaurant. There is also a more affordable self-catering option near Vicolo de 'Cinque, 40
Working hours: daily from 11:30 to 23:30, after 17:00 the turn is about 20 minutes. You can reserve a table through TheFork or by calling +39 06 6456 2839.
What to try: all kinds of pasta, everything is delicious.
    Cost for 2: 20-30 euros.

  2. Impiccetta

It is here that I now drive all my friends to try Roman cuisine, unlike Carlo Menta (lower in the rating) you can order any dish here, not just pasta - everything is very tasty! Minus for the mass tourist - a mandatory reservation in Impicetta is mandatory for at least three to five days. Salivate and read my review of Impiccetta Restaurant.
Address: via dei Fienaroli 7, Trastevere (near Giacomo)
Working hours: daily from 19:00 to 23:00, on weekends open for lunch from 12:00 to 14:00
My favorite dishes: all kinds of pasta, lamb (Abbaccio), tiramisu
The cost of lunch for 2: 30-40 euros.
Table reservation via Google or by phone +39 06 4201 3406

  3. Dar poeta

In our ranking of the best pizzerias in Rome, she rightfully takes first place, without options. I recommend starting dating with real Italian pizza here. You can take pizza to take away, but better to wait. Yes, imagine there are queues here, but I advise you to wait 5-20 minutes and sit down to have a meal inside. Pizza has been baked here at the highest level since 1995. The service is again lucky, but everyone pays off the price and quality of the pizza.
Address: Vicolo del Bologna, 45, 00153 Roma
Working hours: daily from 12 to midnight, after 18:00 the queue is about 20 minutes
What to try: all types of pizza, but you will not fit in so much.
    Cost for 2: 25-30 euros.

  4. Carlo menta

The first restaurant I got to in Rome many years ago. Today it is the cheapest place in terms of price / quality ratio where you can have lunch or dinner in Rome and, of course, very popular. I advise you to start your acquaintance with Italian pasta here. It’s ideal to go here for lunch, as Carlo has been operating since 12 noon. Be sure to try homemade lasagne (lasagne fatte in casa), spaghetti carbonara (spaghetti alla carbonara), penne carlo menta. Leave soups, main courses, and pizzas to others - nothing special. Take a liter of red or white homemade wine (vino della casa) for 8 euros - Rome will seem even more beautiful to you. Part of the staff speaks Russian, although it can sometimes hide it. You should not expect a particularly individual approach, but this is not the main thing. Do you want pasta for 5 euros?
Address: via della Lungaretta 101, Trastevere
Working hours: daily from 12:00 to 23:00
My favorite dishes: Gnocchi (Carlo Menta), tiramisu fatto in casa (home tiramisu), panna cotta con frutti di bosco (panna cotta with wild berries).
The cost of lunch for 2: 25-40 euros.

  5. La botticella

This restaurant is open only after 19:00, it is kept by a nice Italian family. He is more expensive than average. Very tasty steaks, ravioli with mushrooms and everything. If something stays in the plate they don’t understand! Read the review here.
    Address:Vicolo del Leopardo, 39a, Trastevere
    What to try:
cozze (mussels) and everything that fits
Working hours: after 19:00, reservation is required
    Cost for 2: 40-70 euros.

  6. Bottega Fienaroli

First place in our personal ranking, but sixth overall. In fact, this is a small but very cozy self-service bistro. It used to be called Take Your Time.
Owner Giacomo sincerely in love with his business, all his life he was fond of cooking, dreamed of opening his own bistro restaurant. And so, having achieved success in another business and becoming a fairly wealthy person (continuing to do business during the day), he realized his dream. I thank fate that once walking in the narrow streets of the Trastevere district, we accidentally discovered this unusual place. On the very first night of your stay in the Eternal City, you are only here.
Important: Pasta and pizza are not cooked here.but you will have a tasting of many types of prosciutto and jamon, cheeses, as well as rare types of beer and wine (a bottle of wine in the range of 18-35 euros, but these are the best wines in this price category), selected competently and not available in most restaurants. Giacomo and his employees will tell you a story about each dish - where it was brought from, how it differs, who supplies it to them and other interesting facts. Agree, it is very pleasant when the owner of the establishment is often personally present on the spot, in love with his job, and your stomach and the bill for lunch and dinner indicate that you have enough money to return here more than once.
Of the nice options are free internet (takeyourtime password) and the ability to recharge the phone.
    Address:Via Dei Fienaroli 4 - 00153 Roma Trastevere.
Phone for reservations: +39 335 533 0628, you can also write in the Whats app in English or Italian, in extreme cases in Russian (Giacomo teaches)
Working hours: daily from 12:00 to 15:00 and from 18:00 to 01:00
Reservation on Friday, Saturday, Sunday is recommended.
    Facebook Page: Bottega-Fienaroli
For whom: An ideal quiet place to enjoy a delicious meal with a bottle of wine.
What to try: slicing cheese and meat on the advice of staff. Browse through Instagram photos @bottegafienaroli
The cost of a dinner dinner for 2 with wine or beer:40-50 euros.
Note: If you have never been to Italy and want to start with basic (standard) dishes Stop by for lunch at the restaurants / pizzerias described above.

  7. Rugantino

UPDATE: I haven’t been here for the last three years, as it has deteriorated. Typical Roman osteria - home-style restaurant with a simplified menu. Founded in 1924specializes in Roman cuisine. Prices for dishes are 1-2 euros more expensive than in Carlo Menta, which is higher, but still super democratic for Rome. The institution impresses me with an individual approach, most of the waiters not only call dishes, but they can also tell a little story about everyone, they speak good English. Do not be afraid to ask them.
Address:Via della Lungaretta 54, Trastevere, next to the Belli bus and tram stop
What to try: chicken in peppers (Pollo colli peperoni), all kinds of pasta.
The cost of dinner for 2: 40-50 euros
